For a future full of flavour
Campaign for a Social Security for Food in Belgium
Towards Social Security for Food in Belgium!
Our food supply does not meet our expectations, especially in terms of farmers’ payments, the share of qualitative food in the overall food supply, the environmental sustainability of production, processing and distribution, etc. Moreover, access to quality food is even more difficult for the most vulnerable in our society. We propose the creation of a new branch of social security to address these fundamental challenges.
How does it work? An electronic payment card, like the one used for meal vouchers, is provided with 150 euros per month per person. This card can be used to buy food that is produced according to socially, economically and ecologically fair production methods. This requires a real investment in the whole chain, but it is a sustainable investment as far as public finances are concerned. After all, the hidden costs of our food are catastrophic: in Belgium alone, more than 34 billion euros a year (!!) are spent on poor nutrition-related health care, environmental restoration, climate change adaptation, and the like.
With our social security system, we realise our rights to health, pensions, child benefits, …
Why do we not realise our right to food?

CréaSSA : who are we?
This campaign is supported by various organisations working on food issues. They come from different sectors: poverty reduction, public health, agriculture, processing and distribution, consumer protection, human rights protection, environmental protection … Together, they call for the respect of our right to food. The diversity of the group reflects our conviction: if we approach food from various aspects at the same time, we’re going for a future full of flavour and give everyone in Belgium a chance to eat well.
